How Much Mobile Data Do You Need Abroad for 7, 14 and 30 Days?
In this guide

For most trips, budget 0.3 GB a day if you are light on data, 1 GB a day if you use maps, messages and social apps normally, and 2.5 GB a day if you stream video, work on calls or share hotspot. That gives you 2.1 GB, 7 GB or 17.5 GB for 7 days; 4.2 GB, 14 GB or 35 GB for 14 days; and 9 GB, 30 GB or 75 GB for 30 days.

Use the table below as the quick answer, then adjust it with the activity calculator if you know you will stream, back up photos or join work calls.

How much data for travel should you buy for 7, 14 and 30 days?

The simple formula is:

trip data = number of travel days ร— daily data level

Choose the daily level by how you actually use your phone abroad. Light means maps, messaging and checking bookings. Normal means maps, messaging, browsing, social feeds and some short video. Heavy means frequent video, work meetings, photo backup or hotspot use.

Traveller type Daily estimate 7 days 14 days 30 days
Light 0.3 GB/day 2.1 GB 4.2 GB 9 GB
Normal 1 GB/day 7 GB 14 GB 30 GB
Heavy 2.5 GB/day 17.5 GB 35 GB 75 GB

Round up when the available plan sizes are close. A 3 GB plan can cover a light 7-day trip if you keep video off mobile data, but it is tight if you use Instagram or TikTok every day. A 10 GB plan is comfortable for a normal 7-day trip and a light 30-day trip, but it is not enough for a heavy two-week trip.

If you are comparing an eSIM with your home carrier roaming, use the same calculation. Work out the data volume you need first, then compare the total trip cost for that amount of data. Do not compare a tiny roaming allowance with a much larger eSIM plan; that hides the real cost per useful gigabyte.

Which apps change the estimate fastest?

Video is the main difference between a light user and a heavy user. Maps and text messages are small. A single meeting, video call or cloud backup session can use more than a full day of light travel data.

Approximate app consumption varies by settings and content, but these ranges are useful for planning:

Activity Approximate data use Calculator formula
Navigation while driving 5-10 MB per hour driving hours ร— 5-10 MB
WhatsApp or Telegram text a few MB a day days ร— a few MB
Messenger voice call 0.5-1 MB per minute call minutes ร— 0.5-1 MB
Messenger video call 3-6 MB per minute call minutes ร— 3-6 MB
Instagram or TikTok feed 100-250 MB per hour feed hours ร— 100-250 MB
YouTube 480p 0.5 GB per hour video hours ร— 0.5 GB
YouTube 720p 1 GB per hour video hours ร— 1 GB
YouTube 1080p 1.5-3 GB per hour video hours ร— 1.5-3 GB
Music streaming 60-150 MB per hour music hours ร— 60-150 MB
Zoom or Teams meeting 0.8-1.5 GB per hour meeting hours ร— 0.8-1.5 GB
Cloud photo backup 3-5 MB per photo photos ร— 3-5 MB
Hotspot for email and web 100-300 MB per 30 minutes sessions ร— 100-300 MB

Two practical examples show why the daily rule works. If you use maps for a few hours, send messages and check bookings, you may stay near the light estimate. If you add one hour of YouTube at 720p, that alone is about 1 GB, before maps or social apps. If you join a 1-hour Zoom or Teams meeting, plan on roughly 0.8-1.5 GB for that meeting.

Which eSIM plan size fits Turkey, Thailand and Europe?

BeeSim is a travel eSIM store with plans for 200+ countries and regional bundles. Its plans are data-only, so they are useful for mobile internet abroad, not for getting a local phone number.

Catalog prices below were checked on 2026-10-01. Prices are listed and charged in USD; the live destination page shows the current plan list and a local-currency estimate.

Destination If your calculator says this Plan example in the BeeSim catalog Why it fits or does not fit
Turkey Light 7 days: 2.1 GB 4 GB / 30 days โ€” $8.99 Covers the estimate with room for maps and messages
Turkey Normal 14 days: 14 GB 50 GB / 20 days โ€” $18.66 Covers normal 2-week use and some heavier days
Turkey Normal 30 days: 30 GB 50 GB / 30 days โ€” $18.76 Covers the 30 GB estimate
Turkey Heavy 30 days: 75 GB 100 GB / 60 days โ€” $30.99 Covers the 75 GB estimate
Thailand Light 7 days: 2.1 GB 3 GB / 30 days โ€” $8.99 Covers light use, but avoid video on mobile data
Thailand Normal 7 days: 7 GB 50 GB / 10 days โ€” $13.01 Covers normal use and short heavy bursts
Thailand Normal 30 days: 30 GB 50 GB / 30 days โ€” $22.36 Covers the 30 GB estimate
Thailand Heavy 30 days: 75 GB 100 GB / 60 days โ€” $33.19 Covers the 75 GB estimate
Europe, 40+ areas Light 7 days: 2.1 GB 3 GB / 15 days โ€” $15.20 Covers light use if you keep streaming low
Europe, 40+ areas Normal 30 days: 30 GB 50 GB / 180 days โ€” $57.47 Covers the 30 GB estimate
Europe, 40+ areas Heavy 30 days: 75 GB 50 GB / 180 days โ€” $57.47 Does not cover 75 GB; reduce video or buy another plan

There are also daily plans in some destinations. In Turkey, the daily plan gives 10 GB full speed per day at $10.60 per day, with reduced speed after the daily volume. In Europe, the daily plan gives 2 GB full speed per day at $13.40 per day, with reduced speed after the daily volume. Daily plans can make sense when you need a predictable allowance each day, but compare the full trip cost against a fixed-volume plan before choosing.

BeeSim plans cannot be topped up. If you run out, you buy another plan, so it is usually better to round up when your estimate is close to a plan limit.

How do you build your own travel data calculator?

Start with the daily rule, then add known heavy activities.

base data = days ร— daily estimate

known extras = video hours + meeting hours + hotspot sessions + cloud photo backup + long calls

final estimate = base data + known extras

For a normal 14-day trip, the base is:

14 days ร— 1 GB/day = 14 GB

If you expect work meetings, calculate them separately:

meeting data = meeting hours ร— 0.8-1.5 GB

If you expect to upload photos to the cloud on mobile data:

photo backup data = photos ร— 3-5 MB

If you will use hotspot for email and web:

hotspot data = 30-minute sessions ร— 100-300 MB

This method is better than guessing from trip length alone. A 30-day light trip can use about 9 GB, while a 14-day heavy trip can use about 35 GB. Duration matters, but the apps you use matter more.

How can you reduce mobile data abroad without making your phone useless?

Turn off the settings that waste data without helping you travel.

On iPhone with iOS 17 or iOS 18, check these paths:

  • Set the travel line for data: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data > choose the eSIM line.
  • Turn on roaming for the eSIM line if the plan requires it: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > SIMs > your eSIM > Data Roaming.
  • Stop cloud photo uploads on mobile data in the photo app settings before the trip.
  • Download offline maps and playlists on Wi-Fi before departure.

On Android 14 or Android 15, the wording depends on the phone maker:

  • Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > choose the eSIM for mobile data. Then Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming.
  • Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > choose the eSIM > Mobile data and Roaming.
  • Xiaomi: Settings > SIM cards & mobile networks > choose the eSIM for data, then open the SIM settings and enable data roaming if needed.

For social apps, turn off autoplay on mobile data where the app allows it. For YouTube, 480p uses about 0.5 GB per hour, while 720p uses about 1 GB per hour and 1080p uses about 1.5-3 GB per hour. That setting alone can decide whether a 10 GB plan lasts the trip.

What can go wrong with travel data, and how do you fix it?

The most common problem is buying too little data because the estimate ignored video, meetings or hotspot. Recalculate using the activity table. If your result is near the plan size, round up, because plans cannot be topped up.

Another common issue is that the phone uses the wrong SIM for mobile data. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM. On Samsung, use Settings > Connections > SIM manager. On Pixel, use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. On Xiaomi, use Settings > SIM cards & mobile networks.

If data does not work after arrival, check these steps in order:

  1. Confirm the eSIM is installed. BeeSim installation can be done by QR code or manual SM-DP+ entry.
  2. Make sure the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  3. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line if the plan instructions say to use roaming.
  4. Restart the phone after changing SIM or roaming settings.
  5. Check that the plan validity has started only after the first connection in the destination; you can install at home and connect on arrival.
  6. If hotspot is needed, open the plan page and check whether tethering is available for that specific plan. Do not assume it is included.

For payment and refund rules, use the BeeSim FAQ. If the eSIM is installed but still has no data after the checks above, contact support by email from the site and include the destination, plan name and the phone model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a travel eSIM receive bank SMS codes?

BeeSim plans are data-only, so they do not include a local phone number or SMS. If your bank can send codes through its app or another internet channel, that can work over mobile data.

Should I install the eSIM before flying?

Yes. You can install it at home by QR code or manual SM-DP+ entry, then let the plan start when it first connects in the destination.

Are eSIM prices charged in my local currency?

BeeSim lists and charges plan prices in USD. The site can show an estimate in your currency so you can compare before checkout.

What if I need more data during the trip?

Plans cannot be topped up. Buy another plan and switch your mobile data line to the new eSIM after it is installed.

Where can I check payment and refund details?

Use the BeeSim FAQ at /faq for payment and refund information. It is the right place for policy details because they can change.
