Does your phone support eSIM?
Type the model and get a yes or no in a second.
Check in 30 seconds
Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data) → Add eSIM. If the option is there, you are good.
Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM (names differ by brand).
Dial *#06#. An EID line means the phone has eSIM hardware.
Carrier lock
A phone bought on a carrier contract may be locked to that carrier. eSIM hardware is there, but a travel plan will not activate until the carrier unlocks it. Ask them before the trip; it is usually free after the contract ends.
Phones without eSIM
iPhone 8 and earlier · most Galaxy A before 2023 and almost every Galaxy S20 FE · Redmi and POCO, except the Japanese Redmi Note 13 Pro+ · Pixel 2 and earlier · phones sold in mainland China.

Questions
Is eSIM the same as a physical SIM for data speed?
Yes. The eSIM is the same subscription on the same network; speed depends on the operator and the plan, not on the chip.
Can I use eSIM on a tablet or laptop?
Cellular iPads with eSIM work the same way as a phone. Laptops with eSIM (some Surface, ThinkPad and HP models) can install a travel eSIM by QR code, but we do not test them.
My phone is on the list but there is no Add eSIM option. Why?
Three usual reasons: the phone was bought in mainland China, it is a carrier variant without eSIM, or the system is out of date. The *#06# check settles the first two.
