A travel eSIM is the direct route to mobile data in India if you want to avoid local SIM paperwork. For a foreign visitor, a local SIM can require a passport, visa, local address and photo, and activation can take a day.
BeeSim's India catalog includes fixed-data and daily eSIM plans, with live prices on the India eSIM page. Do not use an article screenshot or an old search snippet for pricing; live plan prices stay on the destination page.
Which eSIM plans and prices to expect for India
India has two plan styles in the catalog: fixed-data plans for a set allowance, and daily plans where a full-speed allowance refreshes each day. The fixed-data range runs from 100 MB for 7 days to 50 GB for 30 days. The daily range runs from 500 MB to 10 GB of full-speed data per day for 1 to 30 days; after the daily allowance, speed drops.
| Plan type | India catalog options | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-data | 100 MB for 7 days; 500 MB for 7 days; 1 GB for 7 days; 3 GB for 15 days; 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB or 50 GB for 30 days | Match the duration to your trip first, then choose the data size. |
| Daily | 500 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 3 GB or 10 GB of full-speed data per day, for 1 to 30 days | Use this when your daily use is predictable; after the daily allowance, speed drops. |
| Regional | South Asia (6 areas), Asia (14 areas), Asia (20+ areas), Asia (20 areas) | Use for multi-country trips that include India. |
Prices are not repeated here because they change on the storefront. Open the destination page, pick India-only or regional coverage, and compare the current plan cards there.
Why a travel eSIM beats local SIM paperwork in India
The paperwork is the main reason to use a travel eSIM for India. A local SIM for a foreigner can require a passport, visa, local address and photo, and it can take a day to activate. That is awkward if you land late, need a ride, or have to reach your hotel before you can sort out forms.
With a travel eSIM, you can install the plan at home and keep it inactive for travel. The plan validity starts at the first connection in India, not when you scan the QR code. India plans also have a purchase timing rule: the eSIM must be installed within 180 days of purchase.
The trade-off is simple. Travel eSIM plans are data-only, so they do not include a local phone number or SMS. Use app calling and messaging over data, and keep your home SIM enabled if you need your usual number.
What coverage and speeds are like in India (Jio, Airtel, Vi; 4G and 5G)
India's networks are Jio, Airtel and Vi, with 4G and fast-growing 5G in cities. Coverage in the Himalayan north and in the Andaman Islands is limited on every network.
BeeSim plans for India connect to AirTel (5G), Jio (4G), IDEA (4G) and Vodafone (4G). That network list is useful, but it is not a promise that every place on your route will have service. Mountain roads, islands, valleys and small settlements can behave differently from city centres.
Before you leave Wi-Fi, download offline maps. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Offline maps, then select the area. Save your hotel address, train details and ride pickup points in notes. If your route includes the Himalayan north or the Andaman Islands, assume there will be no-service windows and keep tickets and booking references offline.
Not a Jio user
You do not need to be a Jio customer to use a travel eSIM for data in India. Jio is one of India's networks, and travel eSIM plans can connect through partner network access rather than through your own Jio account. For India, the plan network list includes AirTel (5G), Jio (4G), IDEA (4G) and Vodafone (4G).
This matters if a search result makes it sound as if you must already have Jio service. A data-only travel eSIM is separate from a local Jio mobile subscription. It does not give you a local Jio number or SMS inbox, and it does not replace account features that only a local carrier customer can use. If you need mobile data for maps, rides, messaging apps and email, choose by plan size, validity and coverage notes. If you need a local Indian phone number, check local SIM requirements instead.
Already requested a Jio eSIM
If you already requested a Jio eSIM, treat that request as separate from a travel eSIM order. A local carrier eSIM and a travel data eSIM are not the same product. The local route for a foreign visitor can involve passport, visa, local address and photo checks, and activation can take a day.
Do not delete a requested eSIM profile unless the issuer tells you to. If it is already installed, check which line is selected for mobile data before assuming the new plan has failed. On iPhone, go to Settings โ Cellular or Mobile Service โ Cellular Data and select the data line you intend to use. On Android, use the SIM settings path for your phone brand and confirm the preferred data SIM. If you want a backup while the local request is pending, compare data-only India plans by duration and allowance on the destination page.
Why do over 30 million people choose Airalo
That search phrase points to brand familiarity, but it does not answer the practical India questions by itself. For a trip to India, compare the facts that affect your phone on arrival: plan size, validity, installation timing, local paperwork and network coverage.
The India catalog has 9 fixed-data plans: 100 MB for 7 days, 500 MB for 7 days, 1 GB for 7 days, 3 GB for 15 days, and 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB or 50 GB for 30 days. It also has 15 daily plans, with 500 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 3 GB or 10 GB of full-speed data per day for 1 to 30 days; after the daily allowance, speed drops.
If you are comparing brands, use the same trip assumptions on each page. Put the same number of days, the same expected data use and the same country list into the comparison. The brand comparison page is BeeSim vs Airalo.
What the nearby result cannot guarantee
A nearby search result cannot guarantee service in every part of India. India's networks are Jio, Airtel and Vi, with 4G and fast-growing 5G in cities, but coverage in the Himalayan north and the Andaman Islands is limited on every network.
It also cannot guarantee that a travel eSIM will behave like a local SIM. Travel eSIM plans are data-only, so there is no local phone number and no SMS inbox. A result snippet may mention Jio, but the India plan network list is broader: AirTel (5G), Jio (4G), IDEA (4G) and Vodafone (4G).
The safe check is to open the actual plan page. Confirm the plan size, duration, countries covered, installation rule, hotspot line and live price before you buy. If anything on the page conflicts with an old article or a search snippet, use the plan page.
How to buy and install an India eSIM before you fly (and when the days start)
Buy from the India eSIM page if India is your only destination, or compare regional plans if India is one stop in a wider itinerary. India is included in South Asia (6 areas), Asia (14 areas), Asia (20+ areas) and Asia (20 areas) regional plans.
Before buying, confirm that your phone supports eSIM on the compatible devices page. Then install on stable Wi-Fi. Use the QR code if you have another screen available, or enter the SM-DP+ details manually if needed. The plan validity starts at the first connection in India, so installation at home is fine. Just remember the India rule: the eSIM must be installed within 180 days of purchase.
A practical order of work:
- Choose the India-only or regional plan by destination and trip length.
- Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before travel.
- Label the line India eSIM so you can identify it at the airport.
- Keep your home SIM available if you need your usual number for calls or account messages.
- On arrival, switch mobile data to the eSIM line and enable data roaming for that line.
How to set your phone so the eSIM actually uses data in India
Most arrival problems come from the phone using the wrong line for data. Install first, then set the travel eSIM as the data line only when you are ready to use it.
iPhone on iOS 17 or iOS 18
- Go to Settings โ Cellular. In some regions the menu is Settings โ Mobile Service.
- Under SIMs, tap India eSIM.
- Turn on Turn On This Line.
- Tap Cellular Data or Mobile Data and choose India eSIM.
- Return to the eSIM line and turn on Data Roaming.
- Keep Default Voice Line on your home SIM if you want calls to your usual number.
Samsung on Android 14 or Android 15
- Open Settings โ Connections โ SIM manager.
- Confirm the eSIM is on.
- Tap Mobile data and select the eSIM.
- Go to Settings โ Connections โ Mobile networks and turn on Data roaming.
- If the phone keeps switching lines, return to SIM manager and check the preferred SIM settings.
Google pixel on Android 14 or Android 15
- Open Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs.
- Tap the eSIM profile.
- Turn on Use SIM.
- Turn on Mobile data and Roaming for that profile.
- If prompted to switch data to the eSIM, accept.
Xiaomi on Android 14 or Android 15
- Open Settings โ Mobile networks.
- Tap the eSIM or SIM management screen.
- Enable the eSIM profile.
- Set Default for mobile data to the eSIM.
- Open the eSIM line settings and enable Data roaming.
Using hotspot/tethering with an India travel eSIM
Do not assume hotspot is included just because the phone has a hotspot menu. Hotspot and tethering availability is stated per plan on the plan page.
Check it before buying:
- Open the plan card on the India destination page.
- Look for the hotspot or tethering line in the plan details.
- If hotspot is listed as available, set a strong Wi-Fi password before sharing data.
- If hotspot is not stated, do not rely on it for a laptop or second phone.
If you do use hotspot, remember that a laptop can spend mobile data quickly through system updates, cloud sync and background downloads. Pause those before tethering.
What happens if you run out of data (and how refunds work)
Plans cannot be topped up. If you use all the data, buy another plan and install it as a separate eSIM.
For payment and refund rules, use the current store policy rather than an article. The help page is FAQ.
To avoid running out early, choose by the heaviest day of the trip, not the quietest. A fixed-data plan can work well when usage varies. A daily plan can be easier when you want a set allowance each day and accept that speed drops after the daily allowance.
Regional eSIM bundles that include India (useful for multi-country trips)
Regional plans are useful when India is one stop and you do not want to install a separate country eSIM for every border. India is included in South Asia (6 areas), Asia (14 areas), Asia (20+ areas) and Asia (20 areas).
Use an India-only plan when the whole trip is inside India. Use a regional plan when your route crosses into other covered destinations during the same validity window. Before buying, open the regional plan details and check every country or area on your itinerary, not just India.
Troubleshooting: what to do if you land and have no data
Work in this order. Each step fixes a common setup problem.
- Confirm the eSIM is installed and turned on.
- Set mobile data to the India eSIM, not your home SIM.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on for a short moment, then off again.
- Restart the phone.
- Check whether you are in a known weak-coverage area. The Himalayan north and the Andaman Islands have limited coverage on every network.
- If the phone still shows no data, contact support by email from the site and include your order details, phone model and screenshots of the mobile data and roaming settings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install the India eSIM without scanning a QR code?
Yes. If scanning a QR code is inconvenient, use the manual SM-DP+ entry details from your order instead.
Will an India travel eSIM receive bank SMS codes?
No. The plans are data-only and do not include SMS. Keep the SIM that receives your bank messages active if you depend on those codes.
Where are current India eSIM prices shown?
Use the India destination page for live prices. The site lists and charges prices in USD and shows an estimate in your currency.
Can I manage the plan from an app?
Yes. You can use the BeeSim app or the website, depending on how you prefer to buy and manage the eSIM.
Where should I check payment or refund rules?
Use the current store FAQ at /faq. Do not rely on an older article for payment or refund details.
