How much data does Spotify use?
Music is cheap next to video. Spotify streams at about 43 MB an hour on Normal quality, 72 MB on High and 144 MB on Very high. Even a full day of listening at the top setting is about 1 GB, which is less than an hour of HD video.
The bitrate is the whole story, and Spotify lets you set it separately for mobile data and Wi-Fi. Two things hide behind it: Canvas, the looping video on the Now Playing screen, and video podcasts, which stream video unless you switch the episode to audio.
Downloads are the obvious move for a trip. Premium can save playlists and podcasts on Wi-Fi at the quality you choose, after which playback is free.

How to use less
- Set mobile quality separately from Wi-Fi: Spotify → Settings → Audio quality (or Media quality) → Cellular streaming → Normal. Leave Wi-Fi streaming on Very high.
- Turn on Data Saver for the lowest rate: Settings → Data saving and offline → Data Saver. It streams at Low quality and turns Canvas off.
- Download the trip playlists on hotel Wi-Fi: open the playlist → Download. In Settings → Audio quality set Download → High or Very high, and keep "Download using cellular" off.
- Switch off Canvas by hand if you do not use Data Saver: Settings → Playback → Canvas. The loops are video and play every time you open the player.
- For a video podcast, tap "Switch to audio" (or the audio toggle on the episode); the audio version is a fraction of the size.
- Use Offline mode (Settings → Playback → Offline) when you only want downloaded music; it stops the app from streaming anything, including suggestions.

Calculate for my tripQuestions
Does Spotify use data in the background?
While music is playing with the screen off, yes, at the chosen bitrate; that is normal playback, not waste. With nothing playing it only refreshes recommendations and, if allowed, downloads over cellular, which you can switch off in Settings.
How much data does Spotify need for a two-week trip?
An hour a day at High quality is 72 MB a day, about 1 GB over two weeks. At Normal, about 600 MB; at Very high, about 2 GB. Downloaded playlists bring any of these to zero.
Can I download music on Spotify Free?
Podcasts, yes; music, no. Free accounts stream music only, so the savings available are the Normal or Low quality setting and Data Saver.
Do podcasts use less data than music?
Audio podcasts stream at the same bitrate as music at the quality you set, so an hour is the same. Video podcasts are a different matter; use the audio version on mobile data.
