How much data does TikTok use?

TikTok is the hungriest app most travellers carry. On default settings an hour of the For You feed is about 700 MB; when the feed is mostly HD uploads on a fast connection it reaches 1 GB. Half an hour a day adds up to about 5 GB in two weeks.

The reason is simple: there is no pause. Every video autoplays, the next one is already buffering while you watch, and the app raises quality whenever the network allows. Live streams and longer videos behave the same way, just for longer.

Data Saver is TikTok’s own answer. It halves the figure by playing lower-resolution video on mobile networks, and it turns off by itself on Wi-Fi.

How to use less

  1. Turn on Data Saver: TikTok → Profile → menu (≡) → Settings and privacy → Data Saver → toggle on. It affects mobile data only, so Wi-Fi viewing stays sharp.
  2. Switch off "Auto-play" for the next video if your version offers it under Settings and privacy → Playback; it stops the app from pre-buffering clips you may skip.
  3. Set a time limit while travelling: Settings and privacy → Screen time → Daily screen time. Half an hour a day is roughly 350 MB on default quality; an hour doubles it.
  4. Avoid live streams on mobile data. A live runs continuously for as long as it is open and never drops to a cached, cheaper copy.
  5. If you only want to send a video to a friend, share the link rather than downloading the clip and reuploading it to a chat.

Questions

Does TikTok use data in the background?

Very little when closed: notifications and an occasional refresh. The spending happens when the feed is on screen, so locking the phone is the only saver that always works.

How much data does TikTok need for a two-week trip?

Thirty minutes a day at about 700 MB an hour is close to 5 GB over fourteen days. With Data Saver on, about 2.5 GB; at an hour a day on HD, roughly 14 GB.

Does Data Saver work on Wi-Fi too?

No. TikTok applies it to mobile networks only, which is why you cannot see a difference at the hotel and may think it is off.

Can I download TikTok videos on Wi-Fi and watch them later?

Only video by video, via the Save video button, and only when the creator allows it. There is no offline mode for the feed, so the practical approach is Data Saver plus a time limit.
