How much data does WhatsApp use?
Messaging is nearly free: an hour of active chatting on WhatsApp, photos included, is 10 to 20 MB. A voice call is 30 to 45 MB an hour, which makes a half-hour call home cheaper than a few minutes of video. The video call is the one to watch, at 300 to 400 MB an hour.
What surprises people is not the chatting but the downloads. By default WhatsApp pulls every photo sent to every group you are in, on mobile data, whether you open it or not, and HD media upload sends your own photos and videos at several times the standard size. A busy family group can cost more in a day than all your own messages in a week.
Both have switches in Settings → Storage and data: media auto-download per network type, upload quality, and a dedicated "Use less data for calls" toggle.
Megabytes per hour
| Mode | Per hour |
|---|---|
| Text chats, the odd photoAbout 10 to 20 MB; a standard-quality photo adds well under a megabyte, a voice note a few hundred kilobytes a minute. | 15 MB/h |
| Voice callAbout 30 to 45 MB, both directions; "Use less data for calls" brings it down further. | 38 MB/h |
| Video callAbout 300 to 400 MB, both directions, one-to-one on a phone; group video calls cost more per person on screen. | 350 MB/h |

How to use less
- Stop group media from downloading on mobile data: WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download → When using mobile data → untick Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents. Tap any photo to fetch it when you want it.
- Turn on the call saver: Settings → Storage and data → Use less data for calls. Voice and video both get a lower bitrate.
- Keep your uploads light: Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality → Standard quality. HD quality is for Wi-Fi.
- Prefer voice to video for the long calls, and when you do video, turn your own camera off for the parts where only the other side matters; sending video is half the bill.
- Status updates autoplay video when you open the tab; leave it alone on mobile data if you are counting megabytes.
- If you need to send a video, send it as a document (attach → Document) only when the recipient needs the original; otherwise the normal video path compresses it heavily.

Calculate for my tripQuestions
Does WhatsApp use data in the background?
Yes, and that is where most of its data goes if auto-download is on: new photos and voice notes arrive and are fetched even with the app closed. With auto-download off for mobile data, background use is just message delivery, a few megabytes a day.
How much data does WhatsApp need for a two-week trip?
Two hours a day of chatting at about 20 MB an hour is roughly 500 to 600 MB over two weeks. Add about 40 MB for every hour of voice calls and about 350 MB for every hour of video calls.
How much data does a one-hour WhatsApp video call use?
About 300 to 400 MB on a phone, counting what you send and receive. With "Use less data for calls" on, noticeably less; on a group call with several cameras, more.
Will WhatsApp keep working on an eSIM with a different number?
Yes. WhatsApp is tied to the number you registered, not to the SIM that is currently carrying data, so a travel eSIM for internet and your home number for WhatsApp work side by side.
