How much data does YouTube use?
YouTube’s data use is almost entirely a question of resolution. At 360p an hour is about 300 MB, at 480p about 600 MB, at 720p 1.2 to 1.5 GB and at 1080p 2.5 to 3 GB. On "Auto" the app picks the highest quality the network can carry, which on a good 4G or 5G connection means the expensive end.
Two things add to the stream itself. Autoplay in the Home and Shorts feeds plays video you did not ask for, and the next video starts loading while the current one ends. Shorts in particular run back to back like TikTok and cost about the same per hour.
The app has a Data saver mode that caps quality on mobile networks and stops autoplay in feeds, and YouTube Premium can download videos on Wi-Fi for later.

How to use less
- Set a quality cap for mobile data: YouTube → your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences → On mobile networks → Data saver.
- Turn on the app-wide saver: Settings → Data saving → Data saving mode. It lowers quality, keeps uploads and downloads to Wi-Fi and disables autoplay in feeds in one switch.
- Stop feeds from playing on their own: Settings → General → Playback in feeds → Wi-Fi only (or Off).
- On a long video, tap the gear → Quality → Advanced and choose 480p by hand; "Auto" will creep back up to 1080p the moment the network is good.
- With Premium, download tonight’s watching over hotel Wi-Fi: Settings → Background and downloads → Download over Wi-Fi only and Download quality → Medium (360p) or Standard (480p).
- Listen instead of watching when you can: a 144p stream of a podcast or music video is a tenth of a 720p one.

Does YouTube use data in the background?
Only when something is playing. Background play with the screen off (a Premium feature) keeps streaming the video at the chosen quality, so lower it or use audio-first content. A closed app only refreshes notifications.
How much data does YouTube need for a two-week trip?
An hour a day at 480p is about 600 MB a day, roughly 8 GB over two weeks. At 360p halve it; at 720p double it; at 1080p on Auto plan for 35 to 40 GB.
Is Data saver the same as choosing 360p?
Close. Data saver lets the app pick a low resolution on mobile networks, usually 360p or 480p, and leaves Wi-Fi untouched. Picking 360p by hand on a video fixes it for that video only.
Can I download videos on Wi-Fi and watch them offline?
With YouTube Premium, yes, including a download quality setting; a 480p download is about the same size as a 480p stream. Without Premium the only offline option is the YouTube Go-style "Downloads" shelf available in some countries.
